At what quality/bitrate are the digital albums, and why?
Q: At what bitrate are the mp3s encoded?
Q: What kind of quality can we expect from the mp3s?
Q: What encoder did you use to create the mp3s?
A: We encode mp3s at 128 kbps.
Some users might complain and ask for a higher bitrate, but our assessment is that 128 is CD quality sound. We encode our music with a custom proprietary mp3 encoder to ensure good quality sound despite the low bitrate. By keeping the bitrate low, it also allows us to deliver the digital products to consumers much more quickly, because the file size is reduced.
Note: Apple's Itunes product sells music that is encoded at the equivalent of 128 kbps.
